Alternatives to Confluence being looked at.

None will be a perfect replacement for all the features but try and get near enough.

wiki.js

https://js.wiki/

Pros:

  • Simple install
  • WYSIWYG editor is reasonably good (inter-wiki links are a bit of a pain)
  • Has breadcrumbs and page hierarchy (even if sidebar navigation is a bit pants and you have to set your own breadcrumb names by hand)

Cons:

  • Table of Contents zone + sidebar takes up 1/3rd of your screen
  • Version 2.x is pretty static and 3.x is not due for ages even though it contains some good features
  • Asset manager is not awful but not great
  • Importing from Confluence will involve some manual work, some things might need to be reformatted
  • User management doesn't look great
  • Limited customisation options (eg navigation/toc bars) and no plugins

Bookstack

https://www.bookstackapp.com

Pros:

  • Can export "books" to have offline copies as PDF
  • WYSIWYG - looks reasonable, even with fixed width pages
  • Can upload images by pasting in the page easily

Cons:

  • "Books" are somewhat hard to navigate, and we'd have to divide up content into "Books" or keep one big "Book"
  • Not sure fixed width and layout can be changed to be more suitable for long form/large screenshot/large table content

xwiki

https://www.xwiki.org

Pros:

Cons:

  • TBC
  • No labels
