Alternatives to Confluence being looked at.

None will be a perfect replacement for all the features but try and get near enough.

wiki.js

https://js.wiki/ and https://github.com/requarks/wiki

Pros:

  • Simple install
  • WYSIWYG editor is reasonably good (inter-wiki links are a bit of a pain)
  • Has breadcrumbs and page hierarchy (even if sidebar navigation is a bit pants and you have to set your own breadcrumb names by hand)
  • Can alter the search engine to be better than usual
  • Has a basic kind of confluence import

Cons:

  • Table of Contents zone + sidebar takes up 1/3rd of your screen (but at least you can shove it left or right)
  • Version 2.x is pretty static and 3.x is not due for ages even though it contains some good features we'd want (eg tagging pages to have them grouped together, for lexicon stuff)
  • Asset manager is not awful but not great
  • Importing from Confluence will involve some manual work, some things might need to be reformatted
  • User management doesn't look great
  • Limited customisation options (eg navigation/toc bars) and no plugins

Examples in NWN community:

Outline

https://www.getoutline.com/ and https://github.com/outline/outline

Pros:

Cons:

  • No mediawiki import
  • No categories, or page tags by default? Not sure how you find things other than breadcrums or search which can be tough in some instances (such as the lexicon content)

Bookstack

https://www.bookstackapp.com

Pros:

  • Can export "books" to have offline copies as PDF
  • WYSIWYG - looks reasonable, even with fixed width pages
  • Can upload images by pasting in the page easily

Cons:

  • "Books" are somewhat hard to navigate, and we'd have to divide up content into "Books" or keep one big "Book"
  • Not sure fixed width and layout can be changed to be more suitable for long form/large screenshot/large table content

xwiki

https://www.xwiki.org

Pros:

Cons:

  • TBC
  • No labels
