Overhaul Changes

  • Added Favoured Enemy: Ooze
  • Animal companions stack with Druid
  • Hide in Plain Sight at level 17

Potential Changes

There are so, so many changes that would benefit the ranger.

...

  • Add Favoured Enemy for Ooze and any other racial types we add in Overhaul
  • Redo packages to make more sensible Favoured Enemy choices
    • Undead, Human, Elf, Orc, Elemental etc.
  • Gain benefits of Animal Companion improvements
    • Animal Companion also stacks with Druid so it can be viable to have a better animal companion with a Ranger/Druid combo.
  • Add more spells helpful for rangers especially for their level 3 and 4 spells to make them somewhat useful. Potentially gate it to just ranger only.

More specific bigger changes:

  • NWN2 improvements: https://nwn2.fandom.com/wiki/Ranger
    • Level 3: Toughness (free feat)
    • Level 4: Animal Companion (lowered from 6)
    • Level 7: Woodland Stride (NWN2 adds movement speed, NWN1 just makes you immune to some spells, which is fine)
    • Level 9: Evasion (free feat)Level 13: Camouflage (Allows running while using stealth outdoors, would require engine changes)
    • Level 17: Hide in Plain Sight (Outdoors) (feat Should be Outdoors only, but would need dynamically adding when the area is appropriate, and at this level the Ranger isn't going to get ton of sneak attack bonuses or other benefits from hiding)
  • Not added:
    • Level 13: Camouflage (Allows running while using stealth outdoors, would require engine changes)

Things that'd need other system changes:

...

  • 3.5E adds Combat Style (ie 2 weapons versus archery) Can't do yet (need more ability to update feats with more stuff they can do/set single choices) and is missing some feats in NWN2 such as One Shot, Greater Two-Weapon Fighting or Perfect Two-Weapon Fighting, but still, would be great to have more gradual bonuses and some of these can be mimicked a little with effects.
    • Could have a second ranger class slot to make this easier (as in no need for choices of feats)
    • Could simply add the feats in so they can do archery and two weapon fighting in one. Might be a little too much however there are only 2 feats and frankly Ranger could do with the boost.
      • Ranged feats would probably just be Point Blank Shot at level 2 and Rapid Shot at level 9.
      • Other range related feats: Weapon bonuses for: Longbow/Shortbow, Called Shot can technically be used at range...not much else though!
  • Ranger only feat abilities might be nice to have to have some reason to go high ranger (eg gain enhanced but time limited bonuses versus only favoured enemies, or something that only affects them)
    • Maybe a Ranger Bonus Feat list to pick from (which does not include the favored enemy feats)

Overhaul Description

No Format
Rangers are skilled stalkers and hunters who make their home in the woods. Their martial skill is nearly the equal of the fighter, but they lack the latter's dedication to the craft of fighting. Instead, the ranger focuses his skills and training on a specific enemy - a type of creature he bears a vengeful grudge against and hunts above all others. Rangers often accept the role of protector, aiding those who live in or travel through the woods. His skills allow him to move quietly and stick to the shadows, especially in natural settings, and he also has special knowledge of certain types of creatures. Finally, an experienced ranger has such a tie to nature that he can actually draw on natural power to cast divine spells, much as a druid does, and like a druid he is often accompanied by animal companions.

WARNING: To cast a spell, a ranger must have a Wisdom score of 10 + the spell's level. For example, to cast a 3rd-level spell, a ranger must have a Wisdom of 13.
