ambientmusic.2da is used to define the tracks for music assigned to each area. Scripts can change the music.
The server only tells the client the track, music delay and combat status. The client then decides what to play - this means music tracks generally are not easy to "sync up" among players, especially if combat is involved (since each player has an individual combat state - one PC could be in stealth mode watching a fight happen while another PC is shot with arrows).

Music tracks are the only stereo sound files in the game - but the stingers are technically not music tracks (being WAV) but can also be stereo. They do not need to be left in a folder and can now be in a hakpack file. You can find how areas set their tracks on Area Sounds and Music.

Stinger1 Stinger2 Stinger3 | mus_sbat_rural1 | Sound file name (wav) | Combat music requires a "stinger" to end the track when combat ends. These are generally quite short - the longest Bioware one is 11 seconds. The reason for 3 columns is that you can randomise the end of the track. You need Stinger1, then Stinger2 and Stinger3 filled in, and the game will randomly choose which one to use. None of the game default tracks use this functionality however. Must be a WAV file (although can be MP3 with the BMU header). Should be stereo. See Sounds and Music. |
